Ms. Milva Ekonomi was born in Tirana in 1962, and is a mother of two daughters.
She graduated in Statistics and Economics from the Agrarian University, and earned a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA) in the University of Tirana. In addition, she has received advanced training in the field of economic and social statistics and management in the Bureau of Labour Statistics (US), Eurostat (Luxemburg), Istat (Italy).
She served as Director General of the Statistical Institute of Albania from 1994 to 2005 performing a variety of tasks related to the establishment and institutionalization of official statistics in the country.
She chaired the National Commission of Nomenclatures, and has been a member of the Bureau of the Conference of European Statisticians EEC/UN for two terms. In 2006, she was elected a member of the expert panel of "Paris 21" (OECD), working on the relation of official statistics with human rights. She worked on this project through December 2007.
Later she was included as a key expert in the European Agency for Reconstruction (EAR) in Kosovo, in the project on Support to the Statistical System and Preparation of the Population Census in Kosovo in 2007-2008.
She gave her contribution as a long-term consultant of the Swedish Statistics (Sida) at the Agency of Statistics, where she worked from 2008 to 2013, drafting the statistical legislation and building the Official Programme of National Statistics. She also worked on various projects with UN agencies and other international organizations such as Eurostat, ILO, UNODC, World Bank, DFID, and the IMF.
She is a member of the International Statistical Institute (ISI) and of the Association of Balkan statisticians.
She is a founder of the Agenda Institute, a research centre for economic and social issues established in Tirana in June 2006.
Over the years, she has given her contribution in the movement of women in Albania as an activists in many initiatives, but also in civil society actions. She has also served as a member of Tirana Municipality Council in the years 2000-2011.
She was a lecturer at the University of Tirana, the University of Agriculture and the University "Our Lady of Good Council".
She has written several publications in Albania and abroad in the field of statistics, social and economic development, and gender issues. She is fluent in English and Italian, and knows French.
