Regarding the news report published in the media, according to which a patient who had previously been treated at Durrës Regional Hospital died after being left to fend for himself by the authorities, the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare informs the public that this information is untrue.
The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare clarifies that the patient was neither discharged onto the street nor abandoned by Durrës Regional Hospital, as claimed in the report. He left the hospital after completing his treatment, with the relevant medical documentation and following coordination with social services, the police, and his family.
The patient had previously been treated at the University Hospital Centre “Mother Teresa” (QSUT), where he underwent surgery for the placement of a vascular prosthesis. Following communication between the doctors, he was admitted to Durrës Regional Hospital, where he remained and received treatment for more than a month, including the necessary medical care in accordance with his health condition.
After his clinical parameters had stabilised and his hospital treatment had been completed, a discharge summary was prepared and he was informed that he would be discharged. As he stated that he had nowhere to stay, the hospital authorities notified the social services and the State Police in order to find a safe social and family-based solution.
Following communication by the relevant authorities, a family member stated that he would take the patient into his home. The patient was transported by ambulance to the destination, accompanied by State Police officers, and was handed over to the family member.
The Ministry of Health and Social Welfare clarifies that the patient returned to the Emergency Department of Durrës Regional Hospital yesterday evening, where he remains under the care and assessment of the medical staff.
