The ambitious urban regeneration and development project of the Gjanica River in Fier is approaching its final phase, with construction advancing on Lot 3—one of the most significant infrastructure initiatives for the city. Once a major environmental concern and a source of frequent flooding in the heart of Fier, the Gjanica River is being transformed into one of Albania’s largest and most attractive urban promenades.

Prime Minister Edi Rama, accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Belinda Balluku and Fier Mayor Armando Subashi, visited the site to observe the ongoing works.

Deputy Prime Minister Balluku commended the rapid progress:
“With the completion of this segment, the city of Fier will gain a continuous promenade along the Gjanica River. The works are progressing ahead of schedule. Following the necessary permits and environmental map approval by the Municipality of Fier, site clearance and full mobilization began immediately,” she said.

Engineers on site highlighted that the project spans approximately 5 kilometers, positioning the promenade as the longest of its kind in the country, extending along both sides of the river.

During his visit, Prime Minister Rama praised the quality and pace of the construction, while

Mayor Armando Subashi emphasized the broader impact of the transformation:
“The workmanship is of high quality and the working conditions are excellent, as the river flow has been temporarily redirected. The project includes the construction of a two-level promenade, with pedestrian paths, lighting, and expanded green spaces wherever possible,” Subashi explained.

Once completed, the project will not only provide Fier with a valuable recreational space but also offer a long-term solution to chronic environmental and flooding issues that have plagued the city for decades. The new promenade is set to become a key urban attraction in southern Albania.
