Former Prime Minister Fatos Nano has passed away at the age of 73, following a serious and challenging illness.

Prime Minister Edi Rama extended his heartfelt and brotherly condolences to the family, friends, and political companions of the late statesman through a farewell video tribute, “In Memoriam,” dedicated to the most remarkable moments of Nano’s long political journey,  marked by challenges, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to his mission.

Fatos Nano will be remembered as one of the central figures of Albania’s political life after the 1990s, with a distinguished contribution to the democratic transition and the consolidation of state institutions. He was the leader who brought to Albanian politics the concepts of reform, dialogue, and European integration.

A founder and reformist, Nano entered history as the head of the Albanian government, serving multiple terms as Prime Minister during some of the country’s most critical and decisive periods of transformation after the ’90s.

In honour of Fatos Nano, former Prime Minister of Albania, the Council of Ministers has declared Sunday, November 2, 2025, a National Day of Mourning, in recognition of his invaluable contribution to Albania’s public and political life. On this day, a state funeral ceremony and National Homage will be held
